To the Directors of the London Missionary Society, This Engraving of their New Ship the "John Williams," purchased and equipped from a fund raised by the Juvenile Friends of that Institution
A starboard-broadside colored aquatint of the missionary ship 'John Williams' entering the Bay of Huahine, one of the islands in modern day French Polynesia. The vessel launched in 1844 was named after the celebrated missionary who was killed while evangelizing. Six subsequent ships owned by the London Missionary Society (LMS) were also named John Williams. In the print, the vessel approaches the tropical island of Huahine covered with lush, tropical vegetation. Dark-skinned, native men catch fish in a small boat in the right foreground.
