Figs 1 and 2, side and bottom views respectively of a dark seal with splayed flippers, are labeled "Phoques du Cabinet de Mr. le Cur̩ de St. Louis" (English: Seals from the cabinet [of curiosities] of Mr. le Cur̩ in St. Louis); the subjects were probably stuffed seals. Figure 3 is another side view, captioned "Phoque tir̩ d'un Ouvrage de M. de Buffon" (Seal taken from a work of the Count of Buffon). Figure 4 is a side view of a spotted seal with a feline-like head, labeled "Phoque du Nord" (Northern Seal). Figure 5, the most realistic of the seals pictured, with pale spots, labeled "Phoque vu a Dieppe" (Seal seen at Dieppe [in Normandy]). Figure 6, another side view of a seal, with a figure of its teeth to the left, is labeled "Phoque amen̩ en vie et apprivoise" (Seal brought back alive, and tamed).
