Stern and port-side view of the French 'Mars' on the left and the British 'Nottingham' on the right engaged in battle. The 'Mars' is partly dismasted with her main mast broken. The HMS 'Nottingham' is partly obscured by the gun smoke. On June 1746, the French sent a fleet to recapture Louisbourg and Nova Scotia. On the journey there, the French were hit hard by disease and were short of men. Of the many ship captured by the British, the 'Mars' was captured by the 'Nottingham' under Captain Philip de Saumarez after a two hour engagement.

At the top right of the image is the plate no. '11.'
