Supposed form of an ANCIENT GALLEY of the first magnitude or Rate having forty banks of Oars.

Uncolored aquatint depicting a side view of a trireme (galley with three rows of oars) with forty oar-banks, only six of which are replete with oars. There are two masts, and at the bow is a figurehead in the form of a lion's head holding an arrow, and a battering ram. The ship flies a flag identifying it as Roman, emblazoned with the letters "SPQR" (i.e., of the senate and people of Rome). Scale printed below image. Title printed above.
