A red and blank ink, open letter proof of an aquatint made after Louis Ambroise Garneray. A right whale flails wounded in the waters off a shore. The whale has a harpoon under its left pectoral fin. Two more men ready themselves on boats to harpoon it again. The whaleboat stands by in the right background. This rare proof depicts the stage of printmaking where the engraver if finished with the image, but there are only the outline of block letters. The final version of the print would have the same composition except with the letters filled in.
