A profile of the first French ocean-going ironclad 'La Gloire.' Her wooden hull was covered with armor plates that resisted point-blank shots of the strongest guns of the time. She was also constructed with sails as well as steam-powered single screw. Here, she sits anchored in a harbor flying French flags at the bow and stern. A frigate heads toward the ironclad in the background.
