A three-quarter bow and starboard-side view the East India Company ship, 'William Fairlie,' named after the celebrated India merchant. The ship is depicted leaving the harbor of Prince of Wales' Island, now Penang Island in Malaysia. The land in the background is covered in dense and tropical vegetation, and men wear head wraps and Southeast Asian clothing on small boats. One of the boats has a thatched-roof and a monkey sitting on top of the structure.

The printer used blue and black ink. The foreground up to slightly before the shoreline and the central ship are printed mostly in black ink while the rest of the background is printed in blue ink.
