Illustration from the publication, Historia Animantium Marinorum iconographica et. quidem Repraesentatio ejus II, in qua Balaenarum species cum duplici suo hoste, qui sunt Pristis et Narwal, ex itineraiis, exhibentur (Nuremberg, 1752). The illustration is made up of four parts: a depiction of a whale and sea louse; a depiction of a sawfish and a study of its mouth; a depiction of a narwhal; and a graphic observation of the narwhal head's bone structure and spiral tusk. The inside of the whale's mouth, tongue, and penis are hand-colored red; the water spurting from the whale's spout is green; and the outer frame is yellow.
