The illustration is made up of four parts: a depiction of a whale and sea louse; a depiction of a sawfish and a study of its mouth; a depiction of a narwhal; and a graphic observation of the narwhal head's bone structure and spiral tusk. The inside of the whale's mouth, tongue, and penis are hand-colored red; the water spurting from the whale's spout is green; and the outer frame is yellow.
