A hand-colored map of Guinea that covers the western coast and central Africa from Sierra Leone to Gabon. Relief shown pictorially. The title cartouche is decorated with indigenous figures indigenous and monkeys. Two winged indigenous children carry an ivory tusk to the left of the cartouche, alluding to the ivory trade. A compass rose, rhumb lines, ships, and sea monsters decorate the "Oceanus Aethiopicus," and pictorial vignettes of fauna (elephants, monkeys, lions, etc.) dot the land mass. This map is from Jan Jansson's Atlas Novus (Amsterdam: c. 1640).
