Small illustrations of seven sailing vessels that represent types native to Bermuda, illustration of figures whaling in a small boat on right side. Numerous handwritten notes relating to navigational details and whaling grounds.
Note at bottom: "The Bermuda, or Somer Islands, are situated in the latitude of 32 degrees, 10 minutes North, and in the longitude (as lately corrected) of 64 degrees and 48 minutes West, from the Meridian of London. The coasts in general are very rocky & dangerous, the channels in the several harbours are very narrow and shoaly, and to such a degree, that it is scarce possible to delineate or describe them, that the entry of a vessel without a pilot, is often attended with dangerous consequences -- From the south-west off of Port-Royal, round Northerly to Mills's Breaker, there are rifes and rocks innumerable, even at the defiance of 4 & 5 leagues from, or as far as the land can be descry'd from the deck of a vessel."
In the cartouche bearing the title: "A New and Corrected Map of Bermuda, also [called] Somer-Islands, done at the request of Mr. Robert Brown of Bermuda, for Ralph Noden, Esq.r of London, by his most humble servant, Robert Brenton, 1751."
Along the left edge of the map (near the south-western coast of the island): "Off this end of the island from S.W. to W. N.W. are innumerable rocks at 3 and 4 leagues distance from the land whereby great numbers of vessels have suffer'd -- and here in the months of March, April & May they fish for whales."
At the top edge, to the right of the cartouche in the upper left corner: "Innumerable and dangerous rocks here, & a large rife of rocks which make in an elbow, more than the length of the island about 4 leagues distance from the shoar."
In the upper right corner, beside an illustration of a rock: "The N.W. or norwoods rock, being 3 leagues "distant from Catharine's [sic] point on a N.W. course."
Upper left edge, above an illustration of a whaling scene: "Here they likewise fish for whales."
Lower central portion of the map (Bermuda's south-eastern coast): "This is the boldest coast about Bermuda, and where, in some places, the largest ships, may come within gun-shot of the shore."
