AF-FF-0163.T.jpg

Colored engraving after a painting by Biard of three whalers in a rowboat being attacked by five white polar bears, which are swimming towards them in the water. One whaler has succeeded in stabbing his attacker through the mouth. A sixth polar bear is standing on another rowboat in the background. The frightened faces of the whalers have been rendered in great detail. Print was originally from "Payne's Universum, or Pictoral World", and was the first print in the book.
