The Union ironclad monitor 'Onondaga' in rough seas with a steamship approaching in the distance. Naval signal flags fly atop the ship, and three men stand on one of the turrets. She was active in several engagements as part of the James River Flotilla during the civil war. After she was decommissioned in 1865, she was sold back to her builder and then to France.
