The Personification of Amsterdam Riding in Neptune's Chariot, from series "The River Ij and Seascapes"
A personification of Amsterdam, identified by the escutcheon of the city's coat of arms, rides in Neptunes chariot. The god stands behind, holding onto the rear of the vehicle and holding up his trident. The chariot is pulled by a horse, a unicorn, and mermaids. A putto is blowing a horn from atop the unicorn's back. The hull of a large ship is behind the group. The hull bears the coat of arms of Amsterdam and a large dutch flag with the arms and the word AMSTERDAM in reverse.
The print is inscribed in plate, "L. Bakhuizen fecit et exc. cum Privil. ord. Holland et West-Frisie"
The rest of the address, in a second plate, is inscribed "Zoo bouwt men hier aan't Scheepryk y De Moerbalk van den Staat en Steeden Ten besten van't gemeen en Leeden Van de Indiaansche Maatschappy: Zoo brengt men peerlen, wyd van't een in't ander Landt; Daar Kristus Leerm geleert, gesticht werd, en geplant. Ludolf Bakhuizen."
