A port-broadside view of the steam clipper 'Royal Charter' operated by the Liverpool and Australian Navigation Company. She was built as a clipper except for the iron-hull and auxiliary steam engine that propelled the ship in the absence of suitable winds. She was notable for being wrecked off the coast of Anglesey October 26, 1859. The manuscript inscription at the bottom left margin below the image notes how 446 passengers lost their lives. Many were successful homebound gold miners carrying large sums of gold. 800,000 of treasure was lost with the wreck.
