A hand-colored sounding chart of the low waters for a proposed site of a new pier in Hong Kong in 1873 envisioned by the British architecture and civil engineering firm Wilson & Salway. The main plan is a bird's-eye view of the new pier; at the bottom of the chart is an east elevation view.
The newly incorporated Hong Kong Pier and Godown Co. bought the land area in 1872. The company built a 1,000 feet wharf equipped with steam cranes, engines, and wagons to move cargo from ship to godown.
