AF-WG-1087.T.jpg

Copy in reverse of a Hollars plate, depicting a stormy sea with five three-master ships, and a small whaleboat at far right, in which a harpooneersman raises his weapon to strike what the British Museum refers to as "an improbable whale": it is scaled, with a lionlike head, and double spouts rising out of its nostrils. Corners have been clipped. Amateur hatching has been attempted on bottom left corners of mounting, filling in the space, presumably to make the missing corners less evident.
