Hand colored woodcut. Shows a whale "in his 'flurry', or dying". A sperm whale lies on its back, surrounded by three rowboats. In the boat at the right are six figures, four rowing and two standing; one of those standing pushes a harpoon into the whale. The boat in the left foreground is sinking with two men on board. The third rowboat is in the middle distance with two sailing ships in the distance. According to the account cited on pages 328-329 of the magazine from whence it came, it is blood rather than water gurgling from the spout of the dying whale. (Description from Natl. Lib. New Zealand).
