A modern replica of the map of the Polar regions designed by Willem Barentsz in 1596, engraved by Baptista Deutecum, and published in 1598. The print is plate 1 of a foldout from an unidentified book.

Barentsz made three voyages to the north Polar regions in the last decade of the 16th century. The map depicts the details of his third visit to the region in 1956-1957. Sea monsters, ships, and whales decorate the sea of Barentsz's map. Also, as the discoverer of Spitsbergen (Het Nieuwe Land), above Finmarchia, he was the first to depict the island on a map. His route is illustrated by parallel dotted lines.
