A map of the Holy Land from the 1570, Latin edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the World) by Abraham Ortelius and published in Antwerp in a 100 copy print run. In 1570, Ortelius published four Latin versions in the same year; this map is from the second version, second state. The round, architectural strapwork cartouche contains descriptive text on the brief history of the different names for this region, which by Ortelius' time was called the "Holy Land." Various sailing vessels (three are in the midst of firing) and sea monsters are depicted in the Mediterranean Sea. In some early 1570 versions of this map, there are no wave patterns in the sea and none of the ships fire.

Latin text begining the chapter on "Palaestina vel Terra Sancta" (51r) is on the verso. The last line, centered like the three lines above it, is transcribed: "Itineratium Beatz Mariae."
