Plate 26 of 'Historia de la marina real espa̱ola episodios maritimos' lithographed by J. J. Martinez and others. The print depicts the exchange of gunfire between the Spanish and the British during the Second Battle of Cape St. Vincent on 14 February 1797. Despite the greater number of Spanish ships, confusion amongst the Spanish fleet was so great that the British were victorious. The Spanish ship, 'Santisima Trinidad' struck her colors in surrender, then in which the Spanish 'Infante Don Pelayo' attempted to rescue her. She avoided capture by the British. In the print, the inscription below the image praises the valiant efforts of the Spanish fleet in fighting superior forces without hope.
