Photographic reproduction of a 1823 advertisement for the Vauxhall Cup sailing match, with the following text:
"Royal Gardens, Vauxhall.
Grand Sailing Match, for a superb Silver Cup and Cover, weighing Sixty-one Ounces, Given by His Majesty's Coronation Sailing Society, Entered into for celebrating, annually, the Coronation, and formed by new Subscribers and Members of the OLD CUMBERLAND FLEET, And under the especial patronage of the Proprietors of the ROYAL GARDENS, VAUXHALL will take place on Wednesday 30th of July, 1823, by the following Gentlemen's Pleasure Vessels: [here follows a table listing vessel names, owners, tonnage, and place of origin; the vessels are Antelope (6 tons), Venus (13), Swallow (5), Mentor (6), Fortitude (7), Spitfire (5), Trial (5), Saint George (10), Swift (4), Ludlow (4), Eclipse (6), and Waterloo (8)]
Each Vessel in the race will be distinguished by the Old Cumberland Fleet Colours at her peak, being a St. George's red cross, with blue balls thereon--the number of balls corresponding with the order in which the Vessel stands on the above list, viz, one for the first Vessel, two for the second, and so on.
They are to be sailed by their respective Owners, (or by any Person they may think proper to appoint) from Blackfriar's Bridge, round a Boat moored near Putney Bridge, and back to Cumberland Gardens, near Vauxhall; when the fist will be entitled to the Cup and Cover. The Vessels will be started from Blackfriars' Bridge, at Three o' Clock in the Afternoon precisely, under the direction of the Members of the above Sailing Society, by the firing of two guns, the first to make ready, and the second to start;--the second will be fired in a quarter of an hour after the first.
Several Bands of Music from the Royal Gardens will be upon the River. One large Band will be on board the Diana Steam Packet, which will be at Blackfriars' Bridge at Three o'Clock in the Afternoon, for the accommodation of the Members of the Society, their Ladies, and Friends and to accompany the race to Putney and back. The superb Silver Cup and Cover will be on board, and exhibited to the Company; and it will be presented to the fortunate Winner in the Royal Gardens the same evening."
