Bookplate of the Victorian novelist, William Hale White (nom de plume Mark Rutherford). White worked as an Admiralty clerk, which fact is reflected in the image of a ship upon his bookplate. Behind the ship is a rising sun; to either side are the Pillars of Hercules, and in front of it is a spouting whale. Below, "Ex Libris WILLIAM HALE WHITE" is printed in an ornamental border.
