Plate 28 of 'Historia de la marina real espa̱ola episodios maritimos' lithographed by J. J. Martinez and others. A faintly colored lithograph of the Second Battle of Algeciras, also known as the Battle of the Gut of Gibraltar, on the evening of July 12 (inscription says 13), 1801. After the First Battle of Algeciras at Gibraltar between the French and British navies June 9, 1801, both sides retired for repairs and reinforcements. The French fleet received support from the Spanish, who sent six ships of the lines to escort the French squadron to safety. The British set off in pursuit and sent ahead their fastest ship, HMS Superb commanded by Captain Richard Goodwin Keats, to attack. In the dark of night, the 'Superb,' managed to sail through the Spanish rearguard and in between the ships 'Real Carlos' and 'San Hermenegildo' and fired at them. As the 'Superb' glided away, the two Spanish ships engaged in combat with one another mistaking each other for enemies. Both Spanish ships caught on fire and exploded leading to a large loss of life. The lithograph depicts the confusion destruction from friendly fire. The British 'Superb' sails away from the scene in the left.
