The crowd includes men, women, and children, some on horseback or in carriages, and even two dogs (bottom left). Several men are climbing onto the whale, and others are measuring various parts of its anatomy. Further down the beach, tents have been set up. The lines of the beach, dune, and sea converge on the horizon. There are several single-masted ships at sea and on the beach. Based on a draft by Hendrik Goltzius and an engraving by Jacob Matham. Artist signature, bottom right corner. Title is printed in lower margin and translates to "A 70-foot-long Whale stranded on the Dutch seacoast between Scheveligen and Katwyk in February [lit. gathering month] 1598"
