The 'Maria' defeated the 'America' in several races in the New York Harbor a month before the 'America' won the famous race around the Isle of Wight August 22, 1851. 'Maria' was the fastest sailing vessel of her day. She was designed by Robert L. Stevens in 1844 for his brother John Cox Stevens, the first Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. The dedication is at the bottom of the print. In the print, men work the rope on the deck of the 'Maria.' 'America' closely follows behind. In the foreground, men in a rowboat watch the race unfold.
