Photographic reproduction of a blank invitation from the Cumberland Fleet. The invitation is headed by an engraving depicting Poseidon and Britannia, with a British naval jack, atop the waves, in the company of various nymphs and sea monsters. Britannia blows a trumpet as Poseidon holds up a trophy goblet; in the background at left are several yachts, as if lined up for a race. Artist names are printed under the engraving, but due to the slight blurriness of the photograph, the small and faint print, and the age-related discoloration of the photograph, they are illegible. In large and dark print, below this, are printed the following lines:
"Cumberland Fleet.
Sir [blank]
You are desired to attend a Meeting of the Members of this Society on [blank] next, the [blank] of [blank] at [blank]
Josh. Wood, Secr."
Presumably this was a pre-printed template that could be filled in by hand as needed for any meeting that might arise.
The original paper appears to have been laid paper: the lines are visible in the photograph.
The photograph is backed with cream linen. There appears to be stamped text on the verso under the linen; the only discernable word is "PHOTO".
