Ship portrait of the auxiliary steam packet ship "Massachusetts" sailing towards the right. Another vessel is seen in the distance. The "Massachusetts" was commissioned by Captain R.B. Forbes and built by Samuel Hall in East Boston. She made two transatlantic passages from New York to Liverpool and then was purchased by the United States government during the Mexican War.
